Ivy Liu joins me to discuss the differences between working in UK and China and explains what the difference in view of hierarchy means in terms of getting things done. As she returned to Shanghai after starting her career in the UK, she had to adjust her style and approach to succeed. She highlights how more time needs to be spent showing respect to more senior stakeholders and time spent building support for ideas before decisions are made is well used.
Returning again to the UK, she's appreciated the flatter structure and ability to challenge seniors and bring ideas. Although she misses the relational side of work that is important in China and how the more transactional culture in the UK misses this. Lunch meetings or eating at your desk being a symptom of this that you would rarely see in China.
Listen to our conversation to hear more of her insights.
